Nanyang Street, Taipei's cram school street: food, study spots and housing

Nanyang St., in front of Taipei Main Station, has been Taiwan's "cram school street" since its first school opened in 1954. Every year many students from outside Taipei come here for classes and stay for months. Here is daily life on Nanyang St.: getting there, eating, studying and where to live.

Where Nanyang Street is

Nanyang St. is in Zhongzheng District. It runs from Zhongxiao W. Rd. to Xiangyang Rd., parallel to Guanqian Rd. and Gongyuan Rd., about 5 minutes on foot from Taipei Main Station. The high-speed rail, trains and MRT all stop at the station, so going home on weekends is easy.

The area is full of cram schools: university entrance, exam retakes, graduate school, civil service and transfer exams. 台北儒林 on Nanyang St. has run for over 40 years.

What to eat

Food here is quick, cheap and filling, and every shop has a line between classes.

  • 大四方蛋餅 egg crepes

Only egg crepes and turnip cake. A favorite breakfast before class. No. 3-1 Nanyang St.

Where to study

  • ◆There are also paid study centers near the station. Most charge by time slot, and you can reserve a seat for longer stays.
  • National Central Library

A study room on B1, open until 10 pm Tuesday to Saturday. No. 20 Zhongshan S. Rd., next to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall MRT. Check the library's website for closing days.

Where to stay

A cram school term often runs for months. Hotels cost too much, and a normal lease usually means signing for a year. A monthly room starts at 30 days, comes furnished, and you leave when classes end.

Our rooms near Taipei Main Station are in elevator buildings with building staff, a short walk or MRT ride from Nanyang St.
