Retaking the university entrance exam in Taipei: dates and housing

Deciding to retake the entrance exam often means living away from home in Taipei for the first time. Retake classes cluster around Nanyang St. in front of Taipei Main Station, and every summer a new group of students moves in. Here is the year's timeline and how to sort out housing.

The retake year

Exam dates sometimes move, for example for a typhoon. Check the College Entrance Examination Center for official dates.

  • ◆Summer (around August): retake classes start.
  • ◆October 27 to November 10, 2026: GSAT registration for 2027 entry.
  • ◆January 22–24, 2027: GSAT (學測).
  • ◆July 10–11, 2027: Advanced Subjects Test (分科測驗).

Do retake schools have dorms?

Many people ask this. Some schools offer or arrange housing, but places and rules differ, so ask the school when you sign up.

If there is no dorm, or you'd rather not share one, you'll need to rent your own place.

Choosing a place

  • ◆Close to class: you leave early and come back late, so a short commute matters. The Taipei Main Station area has plenty of MRT lines and buses.
  • ◆Quiet, with your own bathroom: a private suite makes it easier to focus.
  • ◆Flexible stay: after the GSAT you may keep going for the AST or finish early. A normal lease usually means a year. A monthly rental lets you stay as long as you need.
  • ◆Furnished: no bed or desk to buy. Move in with your bags, and there's nothing to haul home afterward.
